With the help of air stones, also called diffusers, air is transported into the aquarium by a diaphragm pump (air pump). The air bubbles from the air stone into the water to the water surface. The air bubbles start releasing oxygen into the surrounding aquarium water on their way to the surface and thus move the water surface. The water surface becomes larger due to the movement and can absorb more oxygen from the air. Long air stones have the advantage that they do not clog up so quickly and can provide reliable service for a very long time.
