Hoses are in operation in almost every aquarium, whether to or from the external filter, operating a UV-C water clarifier, for air pumps, or CO2 fertiliser systems. Grey hoses have proven best for water supply, as the grey colour inside means that fewer algae form. Nevertheless, hoses can become clogged over time and should be cleaned with a hose brush (JBL Cleany) at least every 6 months. Hoses lose their flexibility over time and then need to be replaced. CO2-resistant hoses also need to be used for conducting CO2 gas (JBL PROFLORA T3). If hoses in the packaging or after prolonged storage show kinks, soaking them in boiling hot water for a few minutes often helps.
