Depending on the climate zone, but usually in winter, the low water temperatures between 5 and 15 °C make food digestion difficult. As long as the fish are resting at the bottom of the pond, they consume very little energy and draw on the reserves that they hopefully built up in autumn through an appropriate diet. Feeding during this resting period is absolutely not recommended, as the animals may be roused from their resting phase or the food may lie unnoticed at the bottom of the pond and decompose (thus consuming oxygen and polluting the water). However, as long as the fish are active or when they become active again, they are consuming energy. To ensure that this is not drawn exclusively from their reserves, it makes sense to feed them with very easily digestible food.
