JBL launches a new heating cable – warm feet sound good, but not for aquatic plants

When discussing substrate heating, people always use the same logical sounding premise that aquatic plants grow better with “warm feet”. Plants have indeed been shown to grow better with a substrate heater, but not because of warm roots. The reason is that the roots are supplied with nutrients more effectively. In their natural habitats, plants never have “warm feet”, except in extremely shallow water, because the bottom is ALWAYS colder than the water.

It is far more important for the heating cable of the substrate heater to produce water circulation in the substrate (warm water rises, cold water flows through) so that the minerals and nutrients constantly flow around the plants’ roots. The resulting plant growth is enormous and the amount of nutrients which might cause algae trouble otherwise is reduced because they are consumed more rapidly by the plants' roots.

JBL is launching a new generation of substrate heaters (incl. slotted suction holders for mounting) under the name of JBL ProTemp b, available in four different sizes:

  • JBL ProTemp b 10: with 2 x 1.8 m cables, 10 W, for 60 – 80 cm tanks
  • JBL ProTemp b 20: with 2 x 2.0 m cables, 20 W, for 80 – 100 cm tanks
  • JBL ProTemp b 40: with 2 x 2.2 m cables, 40 W, for 100 – 150 cm tanks
  • JBL ProTemp b 60: with 2 x 2.5 m cables, 60 W, for tanks > 150 cm

PUSH messages from JBL

What are PUSH messages? As part of the W3C standard, web notifications define an API for end-user notifications that are sent to the user's desktop and/or mobile devices via the browser. Notifications appear on the end devices as they are familiar to the end user from apps installed on the device (e.g. emails). Notifications appear on the end user’s device, just like an app (e.g. for emails) installed on the device.

These notifications enable a website operator to contact its users whenever they have a browser open - it doesn’t matter whether the user is currently visiting the website or not.

To be able to send web push notifications, all you need is a website with a web push code installed. This allows brands without apps to take advantage of many of the benefits of push notifications (personalised real-time communications at just the right moment).

Web notifications are part of the W3C standard and define an API for end user notifications. A notification makes it possible to inform the user about an event, such as a new blog post, outside the context of a website.
