... our fish are ready to move in!
This is how Daniel Samland from Marien-Realschule, Kaufbeuren got back to us only a few weeks after receiving the products we had provided. He’s going to train the girls’ working group and support their work on the aquarium throughout the whole school year. Being passionate about aquatics himself, he intends to pass on his enthusiasm to the next generation.
Mr Samland also provided us with a short description about the working group:
Report from the working group
Our new optional subject “Aquarium“ started after the summer holidays, led by Mr Samland and with 11 schoolgirls taking part. After briefly getting to know each other, we started on the first working phase. The aquarium and the cabinet needed to be installed in the place we had chosen outside the staffroom. This required some dexterity. Afterwards the technical items, such as undergravel heating, CO2 system, air pump and filter were installed. In the next step we inserted a dedicated soil fertiliser and the aquarium sand, and then added the decorative objects, which included among other things a volcano with smoke (oxygen) coming out of it. After we had inserted the plants, the fun really started. It was now time to add the water. It was a hard time for the schoolgirls because the aquarium still needed to be “run in” and the water values had to be adapted. And they kept asking: “When are we getting our fish?” But on Friday the unbearable suspense is going to end and the fish will be added! From the start the girls have been participating with great enthusiasm and from now on they’ll be in charge of the care and maintenance of our aquarium. We would particularly like to thank our sponsors, without whom this optional subject would not have been possible: the aquaristic companies Juwel for the aquarium, JBL for all the aquatic products needed to set it up, and the pet shop “Allgäu Zoo” in Mindelheim for the plants and our fish. Again and again we see children and young people displaying great enthusiasm when handling and caring for animals and fish in particular. Do your children have access to an aquarium at school or at kindergarten?
