Product information

This is how to have a beautiful aquarium without troublesome algae

Diatoms form brownish coatings on plants, aquarium base and decorations. They occur when your water contains more than 0.4 mg/l silicic acid/silicates (SiO2). The silicic acid mainly comes from your tap water. It serves to develop the skeletal structure of the diatoms. To combat the algae, just remove the silicic acid from the water and they will die or have no opportunity to form.

Diatoms are neither toxic nor harmful. They even form a part of the nutritional basis for grazing cichlids in Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika. But as algae form brownish coatings which are regarded as unattractive we tend to remove them from our aquariums.

Distinguishing between diatoms and slimy algae
Both algal groups can look very similar. But when you take them between your fingers you can feel the difference: slimy algae feel greasy-slimy even after rubbing them longer, whereas diatoms feel rough.

Special filtering
SilikatEx removes silicate from fresh and marine water aquariums. It removes from the main nutrients the unwanted diatom algae (brown coatings), which often appear after freshwater has been added. SilikatEx Rapid also removes phosphate etc. and thus curbs the growth of other algae. The filter material creates biotope-like living conditions.

FAQ
Does Silikat Ex raise the general hardness ?

When the silicate values are high, the measurable general hardness may in fact rise after Silikat Ex is used. This can be explained by the “masking” of the hardness-producing substances, calcium and magnesium, as a result of the silicates in the water.

How much silicate can be bound with one pack (400g) SilikatEx Rapid?

One pack (400g) can bind approx. 12,000 mg silicate.

Does JBL SilikatEx have any effect on the carbonate hardness and/or the pH value?

Yes, especially in cases of overdoses JBL SilikatEx can reduce the carbonate hardness and thus indirectly the pH value.

This is especially relevant for aquariums with soft starting water and with marine aquariums. In such cases we recommend a parallel control of the carbonate hardness and if necessary also the addition of JBL AquaDur or JBL AquaDur Malawi/Tanganjika (both for freshwater).

Can I use JBL SilicatEX in the drinking water of the bathing tubs, too? Does this material release any substances into the water?? Could these be harmful to my lizards?

The raw ingredient in SilicatEx is normally used to remove arsenic from drinking water on a large scale in waterworks. Therefore, it can be assumed that there is no risk in this respect.

How long does JBL SilicatEx keep for?

JBL SilicatEx has an unlimited storage life in dry conditions.

Special case diatoms - What’s important?

All algae (except blue-green algae, which are actually not algae but cyanobacteria), are exacerbated by high nitrate (NO3) and phosphate (PO4) levels. Diatoms are an exception to this.

This is a great product , absolutely necessary in case you have an excess of silicates in your tank! I was having some algae issues, probably due to the limestones that i have used in the hardscape. This product , turned out to be the solution to my problem...

Bin damit sehr zufrieden.

Das Filtermaterial wirkt also!

PUSH messages from JBL

What are PUSH messages? As part of the W3C standard, web notifications define an API for end-user notifications that are sent to the user's desktop and/or mobile devices via the browser. Notifications appear on the end devices as they are familiar to the end user from apps installed on the device (e.g. emails). Notifications appear on the end user’s device, just like an app (e.g. for emails) installed on the device.

These notifications enable a website operator to contact its users whenever they have a browser open - it doesn’t matter whether the user is currently visiting the website or not.

To be able to send web push notifications, all you need is a website with a web push code installed. This allows brands without apps to take advantage of many of the benefits of push notifications (personalised real-time communications at just the right moment).

Web notifications are part of the W3C standard and define an API for end user notifications. A notification makes it possible to inform the user about an event, such as a new blog post, outside the context of a website.
